This commemorative month acts as a gauge of the political moment, so how do we revamp it?
It's Black History Month in the UK, and it seems it’s time for a re-evaluation. As time has passed, an observance that started out as a commemorative event of heritage, traditions and links between Black populations worldwide, has taken on a commercial tone, growing to encompass functions where individuals of African heritage are paid to address Caucasian groups about “unconscious bias” and “allyship”. The anti-racism rallies of the last decade sparked an increase in the enterprise of showcasing anti-racist commitment. However, that period has concluded. The tide has crested, resulting in a somewhat empty inheritance of what promoting consciousness is for.
The Background of Black History Celebration
Initially celebrated in the America and its northern neighbor, Black History Month was established in 1962 as “Negro History Week” by Black scholar Carter G. Woodson with multiple days of remembrance and recognition in the second week of February. Black History Month grew out of this campaign and was formally inaugurated in 1970. Currently it is marked not only in the North America in winter, but also in autumn in the UK, Deutschland, Éire and the Holland.
The month has evolved since that time, placing less emphasis on the histories of transatlantic enslavement and civil rights battles, and greater focus on notable African descendants in government, the arts, and social movements, and extensively acknowledging the impact Black people have made to influence the nation. It is in educational institutions where Black History Month is most regularly observed, with talks and cultural events. But the manner the celebration is commemorated is a indication of the contemporary political context. Against this backdrop, the month illustrates how minimally it can be effective if it is restricted to either routine organizational acknowledgments, or stripped of political content celebrations of former accomplishments, rather than confronting the situation of the present. It also shows how its limited duration means that it is separated from the wider consistent effort that is needed. A university professor, a prof at a learning establishment, articulated it most accurately when she voiced worries about the fleeting superficial actions of the observance. “The issue with embracing a superficial method”, she commented, “is that it frequently results in that Black History Month becomes a brief show rather than a agent of progress.”
Rethinking, But Not Jettisoning
Establishing how to adapt, revise and extend initiatives for equal rights and acknowledgment in such moments of dejection and worry is a difficult task. There is a temptation to just discontinue events including Black History Month completely, thinking they are simply not fit for purpose, or are remnants of an era that has been ineffective.
However, regardless of the situation, Black History Month, and in fact the whole broad system and tradition of activism for racial justice – community-based BLM initiatives, diversity equity and inclusion initiatives, and indeed, including corporate presentations – represent an infrastructure that a significant effort has gone into. It is there not only to deteriorate as the political landscape shifts (and in fact, regresses), but to be a vital organism.
So what would a new dynamic Black History Month seem? Firstly, it would be not just one concentrated month: something that is spread out throughout the annual calendar (as certain organizations are already commencing), elements of its material (particularly around historic Black characters) incorporated into educational programs. It would also be a period that does not avoid governmental matters, and leaves space for people, particularly youth, to share their anxieties and narratives. What use is basic knowledge of the bygone era when it doesn’t reckon with the present reality of extreme conservative demonstrations in the street? Establishments who celebrate it should not be comforted with the neutral terminology of “unconscious bias” and alertness to minor insults, but challenged by the threats that affect everyone if anti-racism is not treated with importance. In short, Black History Month should be made up-to-date, critical, and adaptive. Perhaps an entire name rebrand is necessary – Black History is Now Month.
