Can You Crack It? The Forgotten Dutch Invention That Forged our Modern World
One can find numerous candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that title should go to the mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers laboring for three months,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid automated saw, that turned timber into planks with almost no human effort, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial as well as artistic dominance across the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s first true factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component transformed its circular motion to vertical action to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same rotary movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the log toward the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the log ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to combine these parts so they operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting on every downward stroke and moving on every return motion. It was an astonishingly intelligent use of fundamental parts.”
A fact that brings us up to the current puzzle. I’d like for you to reimagine one of the basic concepts underpinning this historic invention.

A “guide”, which is a tube or housing through which one of the bars can slide snugly. (Assume you can mount components on a base, so the parts do not fall down.)
